Seth Shteir – National Parks Conservation Association:

I’m writing you to request your attendance at the upcoming Cadiz Public Comment meeting at 6pm on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at the Joshua Tree Community Center.

This isn’t the first time Cadiz, Inc has attempted a water conservation and recovery project and some of you may remember previous iterations of this project in the early 2000s.

The essence of the project is to pump vast quantities of desert groundwater over the project’s 50 year life span and send it to thirsty California Communities to the West. My organization, along with numerous other environmental organizations and stakeholders, are very concerned about this project’s potential to impact groundwater resources, air quality and the Mojave National Preserve. Proponents of this project are suggesting that the project is sustainable, but that’s far from the truth. NPCA, with the support of other organizations, has hired a hydrologist to evaluate some of the Cadiz recharge claims and the overall environmental impact of this project. Although our hydrologist hasn’t completed his work quite yet, he has characterized this project as unsustainable and commented that he had never seen a more aggressive project of this sort in his entire career.

The comment period for this Draft EIR ends on February 13.

In summary, NPCA and other organizations and stakeholders are concerned about the accuracy of the hydrologic models in this draft EIR and equally concerned that the comment period isn’t long enough to thoroughly evaluate the almost 3000 page Draft EIR. I’ve attached some talking points and the Cadiz NOP which has a preliminary description of the project and good map of the project area. Thank you for your interest on this matter and I hope you will all find time to attend. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with further questions or comments and have a great rest of your Saturday!

Best,

Seth
