(JOSHUA TREE) The Morongo Basin Conservation Association invites the public to its annual meeting on Saturday, January 21, in the Joshua Tree Community Center.

A highlight of the meeting will be a special presentation by members of the Morongo Basin Dark Skies Alliance. This local alliance of representatives from eleven area groups and agencies,* including Joshua Tree National Park and the Marine Base, is focused on promoting energy-saving lighting, and improving the San Bernardino County lighting ordinance. Claudia Sall, program chair, says “Dark Skies Alliance representatives will describe progress on their proposal to change the County Lighting Ordinance, which would help to maintain our precious dark night skies and save energy as well. Before the meeting and during a program break, local astronomer, Tom O’Key, will be demonstrating his solar telescope. Don’t miss out.”

MBCA directors will share the accomplishments of 2011 and what’s in store for 2012. This will include a report on MBCA’s Desert-Wise Living programs, a review of the actions MBCA has taken on local, state, and national issues, and how its membership and supporters’ involvement in the MBCA Survey helped guide our progress and improvements. You will also hear about MBCA’s goals for 2012, and how you can help further the goals of MBCA in saving the best parts of the Morongo Basin for future generations.

All Basin residents are welcome to attend this free presentation as part of MBCA’s annual meeting, on Saturday, January 21, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Joshua Tree Community Center, 6171 Sunburst in Joshua Tree. MBCA is a 501(c)4 non-profit, community-based, all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the economic and environmental welfare of the Morongo Basin since 1969.
